Could i ask them to use bitless reins?

i've been going riding for some time now, but, over the past few months i've been too scared to go because i caught them breaking one in with a bit, i couldn't bear it seeing the poor thing having his mouth torn apart, before when riding i didn't really pay attention to the tack i was too busy admiring the horses, do you think if i asked they'd change the reins, would they be just as easy to control? thanks for reading
