Is shooting shot shells at an attacker's face considered out of the ordinary from a legal perspective?

supposed I kept shot shells loaded while out camping just to get rid of snakes around my camp that won't leave, but all of a sudden a strange man attacks me. Are shot shells considered legal for defense purposes in the heat of the moment?
